The International Development office, within Development and Alumni Relations at the University of Pennsylvania is responsible for raising major and principal gifts from alumni, parents and friends residing overseas, while also managing two international foundations and two global volunteer committees. The office currently consists of an Assistant Director, a Managing Director, Senior Managing Director and a Senior Advisor. Reporting to the Senior Managing Director of International Development, and working in close partnership with vested interests across the university, the Director of International Development is a key member of the University’s centrally based Development and Alumni Relations program. The Director will be responsible for developing and implementing a comprehensive and coordinated fundraising strategy for several cities within a given international geographical region which support the goals and objectives of a centrally based international office. The strategic city plans must not only consider cultural nuances, number of constituencies, their capacity and philanthropic outlook, but also admissions, donor profiles, political climates and more. Each strategy must also support the schools and centers. The Director will be expected to be intimately familiar with the specifics of the region, and serve as an expert resource to other colleagues. The Director will lend leadership and support the International team in making programmatic decisions by providing expertise about regions, international fundraising trends, school and center priorities and by engaging in ongoing and strategic planning. The objective of the strategic plans is to better understand the complex international philanthropic landscape to increase awareness of Penn and its institutional fundraising needs. This would include prospect identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of individuals. The expected outcomes would be securing increased major gift support (gifts of $100,000 or more) from international alumni, parents, and friends of the university. These strategies will involve collaborations in the central areas of annual giving, principal gifts, alumni relations, and special events, as well as university-wide, supporting school and center directors with their respective international development strategies. The Director will utilize the President, Deans, Faculty, and Senior Officers in select international development activity, in consultation with the Senior Managing Director. The Director will play an active role in the oversight and management of any volunteer structure and/or foundation in assigned region, plus lend support of other international volunteer structures and the University’s two foundations. Specific Duties: * In close consultation with the Senior Managing Director, develop a short- and long-term strategy for donor cultivation, solicitation, engagement and stewardship for assigned region(s). Using data, knowledge of the region and trends to review the complexities of assigned region(s) to create regional strategies. * Strategize targeted prospect activity with the goal of closing major and principal gifts, and overall fundraising in the region(s). The Director will develop new strategies and initiatives based on a comprehensive analysis to increase the number of prospects under active management. * Manage a specific international geographical region and/or portfolio of major gift prospects. The primary objective will be to accomplish meaningful prospect interactions throughout each phase of the prospect management process. * Work with school and center directors to collectively create school/center strategies and take an active role in their international prospect activity. * Serve as an advocate for international constituents. The Director must ensure university-wide fundraising activities, recognize the interests and needs of international constituents, and advise colleagues appropriately. In particular, the Director must work to promote tax-beneficial giving opportunities that are available internationally. * Work closely with donors and prospective donors to plan and execute cultivation, stewardship and outreach events for prospects as strategically appropriate. * Identify and develop volunteer leadership in the region as appropriate and applicable. Be familiar with Penn’s volunteer structure and opportunities to help identify international prospects for the various opportunities. * Serve as an internal resource for President, Deans, Faculty, and Senior Officers planning international trips. This responsibility necessitates familiarity with the various alumni clubs, top prospects, and existing university relationships; it requires the ability to strategically make optimum use of their time and to accompany these individuals on trips as required. * Develop an understanding of the cultural protocols to follow in targeted region(s), and inform colleagues appropriately. * Represent International Development at meetings, events, and professional conferences.
